Extended Learning & Development - Afterschool

Through partnerships with the local YMCA, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, and other community stakeholders, Autism Charlotte provides North Carolina's only inclusion-based afterschool program, delivering academic support, social enrichment, personal development, and recreation for children with autism. Services are provided at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and integrates children and youth with autism into traditional afterschool settings with their typically developing peers. The program is delivered in multiple locations throughout Mecklenburg County and offers a balance of educational and social learning; individualized skill development training; recreational and cultural opportunities; and personal support; with low teacher to child ratios.

Extended Learning & Development provides a safe and nurturing environment aimed at meeting each child’s unique needs. We work with parents and teachers to develop individualized Service Plans and implement daily strategies that support day school and parent goals. We create opportunities to teach patience, tolerance, and acceptance and  further build support for children with autism by increasing awareness, building acceptance, and facilitating inclusion by engaging typically developing student peers as homework helpers, playmates, and snack buddies for the children we serve.
